Network 17 “Histories of Education” is linked to the European Educational Research Association.

NW 17 began in 1999 and the original convenors were Frank Simon, Ian Grosvenor, Martin Lawn and Henk Van Setten. The original field of focus remains and, over the years, new convenors have joined the original group. Currently, convenors are Cathy Burke (University of Cambridge, UK), Beatrice Haenggeli-Jenni (Université de Genève, Switzerland), Helena Ribeiro de Castro (Link-convenor – Instituto Piaget Campus Universitário de Almada, Portugal), Elena Tabacchi, Geert Thyssen (University of Luxembourg) and Pieter Verstraete (K.U. Leuven, Belgium).

Our focus is the histories of European educational spaces, their national or theoretical discourses, ways that ideas about education travelled and crossed disciplinary and national borders in the past, public exhibitions, intellectual and professional networks and their associated publications, issues that directly or indirectly relate to the history of schooling and the development of associated ideas and practices, and the history of multiculturalism.

The Network is especially interested in new forms of historical scholarship (for example, in images or artefacts or archives), new media (e.g. web based projects) and in under-represented areas (European regional influences, forms of colonial education, adult education and minority ethnic education). The Network would like to promote the format of a workshop.

Histofed blog is one of the last project of the NW 17. The idea is born in September 2014, during the European Conference of Educational Research, held in Porto. Histofed seeks to promote all the activities of the NW 17 (such as the annual European Conference on History of Education, the Summer Schools and so on) and to create a virtual space of discussion and encounter beyond the conference room. Scholars, researchers and students interested in history of education are invited to join. NW 17 runs a mailing list (EERA-NW17-HistoriesofEducation):  http://www.eera-ecer.de/networks/network17/nw-17-mailing-list/
